Orders for papers may also be left will* them. BOROUGH COUNCIL. Nov. 22. The monthly meeting of the Stratford Borough Council was held last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan), Crs. R. H. Cameron. S. Ward, A. Stewart, W. Mclnnes, C. Jackson, S. B. Hunter, C. B. Walsh, and E. S. Rutherford. The electrical engineer advised that the dam be cleaned out so as to secure ex-tra water supply to keep the hydro running. It was decided that the works committee be empowered to spend up to £5O on the work. Cr. Ward referred to the poor pressue of the water supply in the daytime and moved that the works committee should go into the matter. Cr. Ward moved that the genera! committee should bring down fi report as to the advisability of showing pictures in the Town Hall. He thought that the council should be able to run pictures for three nights per week. At Eltham the municipal pictures were showing a profit, charging Is and Cd, and showing pictures for which there was a much bigger charge here. He also asked that the town clerk should obtain information from other towns which run municipal pictures as to the prices charged and the management.— Carried. It - - was decided that Captain T. G. Grubb Xhould be re-appointed superintendent of the Stratford Fire Brigade.
DOMAIN BOARD. After the council meeting the council sat as the Domain Board. The report of the borough engineer on the work which had been done in erecting *ew seats, etc., was received. Cr. Jackson asked if it would not be possible to raise money to provide a good sports No progress was being made in that direction, whilst in other parts of the country sports were being revived and brought back to prewar importance. The Mayor pointed out the difficulty’ of raising money. Cr. Ward suggested the holding of a good sports meeting after Christmas. The Mayor said that he would like to -see the* matter taken up by some outside organisationIt was reported that the war trophy, the captured German field gun, had been placed on a concrete base at the entrance to King Edward Park, and securely fixed with bolts.
SWIMMING CLUB. The annual meeting of the Stratford Swimming Club was held last night, Mr. F. D. Gaffaney. president, presiding. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance, of £137 10s 6d. The election of officers resulted as follows: Patron, Mr. R. Masters, M.P.; president, Mr. F. D. Gaffaney; vicepresidents. Messrs. J. W. McMillan, T. Smith, J. W. Boon. J. Petrie junr., W. P. Pratt, D. J. Malone; secretary, Mr. G- L. Gaylard; treasurer. Mr. W. Pinhey; committee, Messrs. Lowry, Baird, W. Grubb, McDonald, W. Boon junr., F. H. Masters. Malt. R. GrubbA vote 'of thanks to those business people of the town who had donated trophies last year was passed. A sub-committee consisting of Messrs. Gaffaney and Gaylard was formed to confer with delegates from the school committee regarding the use of the baths.
SCOTTISH SOCIETY. A special general meeting of the Scottish Society was held on Friday night for the purpose of considering the adoption of new’ rules for the society. There was a very small attendance, due to the holding -of other meetings at the same The new rules, as amended, were gone through and adopted. It was decided that the Burns Anniversary on January 25 should be celebrated by a smoke concert, which will be held at the Town Hall. A vote of thanks was tendered Mr. T. Smith for the use of his rooms. MUSICAL SOCIETY. The third and fourth concerts to be held bv the Stratford Musical Society will take place at the Town Hall on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, and will prove excellent endings to days at the show. A glance at the programme shows that a variety of items have been chosen to make up a bill of fare which should please the most exacting musical critic. Miss Teresa McEnroe, who arrived from Wellington by the mail train last night, will appear at both concerts, and her singing should prove a big attraction. For the second evening’s programme the services of the Hawera male quartette have been secured, and local talent will be heard at its best on both evenings. By request two of the gems of the last concert, “Love’s Old Sweet Song” and “Dear Land We Love,” will be repeated on the first and second nights respectively. Booking is at Grubb’s, and it is stated that already a keen demand has been experienced for seats. During Show Week you should not miss the opportunity of getting some of those splendid shilling writing pads from Wilson Bros., Stationers, Stratford The cabinets of notepaper and envelopes at 1/6 and 1/9 will probably interest you too.
