EAST END RESERVE.
INROADS OR THE SEA. PROTECTIVE WALL PROPOSED. The protecton of the East End Reserve from erosion by the sea was discussed at a meeting o-f the reserve committee held last night, and it was decided to approach the Borough Council for a subsidy towards the cost of erecting a concrete wall along a portion of the seafront in this locality. Mr. A« R. Davis presided. At the outset of the discussion a suggestion was made by Mr. C. Warren that a concrete wall should be built along the front of the reserve, and he expressed the opinion that this would be cheaper than removing the pavilion. A wall was the only effective means in his opinion, and he referred to the results achieved by building a small wall near the railway station over 40 years ago. He did not favor rubble walls, as the euctxon of the big seas usually undermined their strength. His proposal was for a concrete structure , with coping, and backed by boulders. He moved. 0 that the council be recommended to build a concrete wall for the protection of the reserve, and said he thought the work Could be done for £2OO per chain. The chairman said the committee- had promises of financial support to the extent of £3OO from private individuals towards building a wall, and the money would be forthcoming if . the work was decided on. He had suggested that 4| chains be constructed. It was suggested that the Borough Council be asked to subsidise the £3OO to the extent of £2 for £l, which would result in a good sum towards the cost of the work. The motion was seconded by Mr. R. Bennoch, and carried. It was decided that Messrs. Davis and Warren wait on the council to ask for a subsidy of £2 for £1 towards the erection of a wall.
