REDUCED WAGES QUESTION. MANAGER APPEALS FOR LOYALTY. By Telep-aph—Press Association. Auckland, Ndv. 21, The question of a reduction of wages was considered by the Auckland 'branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants. A resolution was passed expressing the opinion that, as the Arbitration Court had stabilised wages until May, 19*22, a reduction would be a distinct breach of contract. A second resolution passed was that the A.S.R.S. executive council should not accept any reduction of wages or extension of hours without referring to the rank and file of the service, in order that a ballot on the proposals might be taken. Wellington, Nov. 21. An important statement indicating the intention of the Railway Departnren to institute a scheme of retrenchment was made by the General Manager (Mr. McVilly) at a social gathering of the Engine-drivers’, Firemen’s and Cleaners’ Association on Saturday Mr. McVilly quoted figures showing that the railways were being run at a loss, and said that he had called representatives of the railwaymen’s organisations together for the purpose of putting the position to them. He wanted the men in time of stress and adversity to the country to give the department their loyal assiaance and help, and he desired them to appreciate the necessity for retrenchment that had to take place
