BOROUGH AFFAIRS.
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The New Plymouth Borough Council met last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson), Crs- J. Kibby, V. ( Griffiths, T. N. Blackball, W. Rumball E. Dingle, R. L. Parkin, J. Brown, and R. A. Large. REQUEST FOR WATER MAINS. Fourteen ratepayers petitioned tlie council urging the necessity of laying a water main on the Pioneer Road and ' side streets. 1 The Mayor said nothing could be done 1 till the loan, for which application had i been made to the Government, was ! approved. The general manager (Mr. F. T. Bellringer; said application for the loan had been made some time ago, but no definite answer would be available till all the formalities were gone through. The council decided to inform the petitioners that their request will have consideration when the allocation of the loan is under review. BOUNDARY ROADS. The Taranaki County Council wrote suggesting the following arrangements in respect of the proposed agreement for the upkeep of boundary roads: (a) The Borough Council to be wholly responsible for the following roads: Avenue 11.50 chains, Tarahua 21.50 chains, Doralto from new road northward 6 chains; total 39 chains, (b) The Taranaki County Council to be responsible for the following routes: Carrington 7.85 chains, Frankley 4.25 chains, Elliott (Tukapa) 1-1.50 chains, Doralto from new road westward 13.25 chains; total 36-85 chains. Reporting on the above the engineer (Mr. W. H. Cook) said the measurements were as close/as it was possible to get from scaling off a lithographic plan. He suggested that posts should be erected at the different boundary ends. It was decided that the arrangement be confirmed providing a ten years’ agreement is entered into, thereafter either council to have the opportunity of terminating the arrangement at twelve months’ notice. GENERAL. An offer was received from Mr. Frank Messenger to contribute £4 towards the cost of putting a crossing at the junction of Wakefield Street and Avenue Road, a work which the council had previously decided was not to be undertaken.—ft was decided to reply stating that the council intended to adhere to their previous resolution, but if the whole cl. the cost was borne by the residents concerned the work could proceed. Application was made on behalf of the New Plymouth Croquet Club by the secretary (Mrs. M. A. Fookes) for the lease of one acre of land at the East End Reserve for the purpose of forming croquet lawns. The proposed site is on the flat near the bridge.—Consideration was deferred. Three applications for lighting were granted, these being subject to the installation of limiters, and the undertaking of the owners to reduce the number of lights in other properties in. order to ensure no extra demand on current. Application was made by the Seventh Day Adventist conference for the extension of electric light to their annual camp, to be held on the racecourse at New Plymouth from January 3 to January 15.—The request was agreed to. The question of mounting tire field gun (war trophy) at Kawaroa Park was left to Or. Brown and the engineer to confer with the park committee.
