STORAGE OF OIL.
THE QUESTION OF DANGER. A REQUEST REFUSED. The Vacuum Oil Company’s request for the lease of a site in Modesworth Street to erect a warehouse for oil again came up for consideration by the New Plymouth Borough Council last night. The Fire Board, to whom the matter had been referred, wrote intimating that the superintendent (Mr. F. C. J. Bellringer) had expressed the opinion that it was not advisable to permit an oil store to be erected on the site mentioned. The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson) said his opinion was that they should keep alt inflammable goods out of the town area. He thought the town would go ahead even if such stores were kept out. Cr. J. Brown said he noticed that such stores were being removed out of the cities. The Mayor: “Yet when we propose to keep them out we are retarding progress.” Subsequently it was decided, on the motion of Crs. Blackball and Dingle, that the council reply intimating that they are not willing to lease the site in question for the purpose of an oil store.
