FARM AND DAIRY.
BROPOSED DAIRY SHOW AT MANAIA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) At a meeting of the Manaia branch of the Farmers’ Union, at which a number of members of the Otakeho branch were also present, on Friday evening, consideration was given to the proposal by the local branch to hold a cattle show in Manaia. The chairman (Mr. J. Dakers) explained the object for which tfae meeting was being held, and the secretary (Mr. R. G. Muggeridge) reported, on the reception of. a deputation from the branch by the Horticultural Society. It waft originally proposed to seek the society’s consent to the holding of a cattle show in conjunction with the flower show, but this idea was abandoned on the advice x>f the society. He read a draft resolution that a cattle show and demonstration be held on a date to be arranged, open to members of the Farmers’ Union, and also to non-njembers at an increased entry fee. k Mr. W* Vernon advocated the holding ■jof a large show, on the lines of that held at Hawera, but Mr. E. Long pointed out that the question of finance would first have to be considered.
The chairman doubted whether accommodation could be found for a big show. In explaining the procedure adopted by the Otakeho branch of the union in holding its cattle show, Mr. J. Daley, secretary of that branch, stated, that sufficient money vfae retained out of the entrance fees to pay expenses, arid the balance wAB allotted as prize-money. Some canvassing was done in order to defray the Expense of hurdles and similar requirements. After a discussion as to whether the show should be confined to members of the Fa.mers’ Union, it was decided that a,show be held, open to members of the Farmers’ Union. The/ following schedule of classes was drawn up, the breed being Jersey unless otherwise stated: —Bull calf, 18 months bull, aged bull; heifer calf, 18 months heifers, pair of 18 months heifers, heifer in milk (any breed, first calf), dairy cow; spring cart horse, to pull 17 cwt. Entrance fees were fixed at 7/6 for bulls and cows, and 5/- for other classes. . .
An executive was- appointed consisting of the chairman, Messrs. J. T. Clague, Garni in. Southcombe and Stoddart, and the secretary. It was left to the executive to deal with the question of selecting suitable yards in which to hold the show. Mr. Daley congratulated the members of the Manaia brandh on their initiative in inaugurating the show, and promised the assistance of the Otakeho branch. The chairman thanked Mr. Daley for his attendance and advice, and urged members of the local brandh to use their best efforts to make the show a success.
