AGRICULTURAL MATTERS.

THE TARANAKI SOCIETY. GENERAL COMMITTEE MEETING. A meeting of the general committee of the Taranaki Agricultural Society was held yesterday. Present: Messrs. W. B. Grant (president), H. C. Sampson, H. Stonex, A. E. Washer, W. Rumball, T. Luxton, J. G. Short, W. K. Morris, W. Rumball, A. R. Davis, C. Hoskin, A. P. Lister, A. Turnbull, D. Ruebe, F. Cornwall, H. Salway and B. Blackball. Apologies were received from Messrs. J. H. Allen and C. Dobson. As this was the first meeting of the committee as recently appointed by the annual meeting, a number of details in connection with the year’s working was discussed. It was decided that the committee meetings be held as formerly namely, on the first Friday in each month.

INCREASING THE MEMBERSHIP. The chairman recalled that the annual report showed a decline in membership was being experienced, and he said it behoved all of the committee to make an effort to increase the roll. Districts which particularly required canvassing were Inglewood and Rahotu. In reply to a question, the secretary (Mr. W. P- Okey) said the decrease in the membership for the year as compared with the previous period was about 150. Mr. A. L'urnbull said there seemed to be a good deal of misconception as to what the Agricultural Society existed for. The idea that their only aim was the running of an agricultural show was, of course, a wrong one. He favored conducting a publicity campaign. Mr. Short suggested that efforts should be made by individual members to secure new members. Mr. Sampson urged that, special efforts should be made to secure members from the outlying districts. Mr. Turnbull moved in favor of conducting an advertising campaign, the motion being seconded by Mr. Morris. An amendment was moved by Mr. Salway in favor of instituting a personal campaign. and this was seconded by Mr. l.ister. The amendment was carried, it being decided that the authorised representatives of ’he society be asked to attend as many stock sales as possible, with the idea of securing new members, and that each member be asked to co-operate in the movement.

He stated that the function was a public one in honor of the visit of Their Excellencies Lord and Lady Jcllicoe, and as it had not turned out a success financially the committee desired to know if the society would grant a remission of a portion of the charges.- -It was decided to reply intimating that the committee was not prepared to make any further concession.
