THE TRAMWAYS.

RETURNS FOR OCTOBER. INCREASE OF REVENUE. During October, the New Plymouth trams earned £1619 8s lid, an increase xif £76 0s 3d over the receipts of ’the same month last year. The increase in the number of passengers was 9158, the total being 154,553. The number carried on the Morley .Street route and included in the above was 13,394, the fares amounting to £99 12s 3d. The report of the tramways manager (Mr. R. H. Bartley) states:—The new cars have all been passed by the Public Works Department and are in traffic operating satisfactorily. We have experienced some little trouble with several of the journal bearings heating, but this is only a minor matter and has now been overcome. The annual overhaul of the older ears, which has been delayed on account of the erection of the new cars, is now well in hand. As soon as these are completed and ready for traffic T purpose submitting for the council’s approval an amended and quicker time-table. The tramways shelter shed at Strandon was finished during the month and is a very satisfactory piece of work. In view of this shelter being completed, together with the fact that a faster time-able is in course of preparation, I would* recommend that the request stop at the Mangorei Road be discontinued. This stop being on a fairly severe grade is ta costly one and oii account of its close proximity to the Strandou section its discontinuance should not prove an inconvenience to passengers. The « revenue from the ’bus service for the month amounts to £l2l 17s (id, showing - an increase of £25 le lOd as compared with last year, and 2013 additional passengers have been carried. The records for the month are as under:— Mil** r »n. 22R9; passengers carried, i 1.194: Westown 6651, Frwflkley Road 671, Vogeltown 387 z 2.
