HILL CLIMBING WITH “FIAT” CARS. REMARKABLE example of hillclimbing ability has been furnished by the new 10-15 h.p. “FlAT”'light ear, known as Model 501. A motor cycle hill ciimbing competition having been organised over the Rampe de la Donzelle, near Geneva, Switzerland, the owner of one of these little “FIATS” decided to give a demonstfFation of its ability to tackle even freak hills with a gradient considerably in excess of the maximum the car is guaranteed to climb on first gear. The Rampe de la DonzeUe is 340 yards in length. Towards 1 the middle its gradient is 28. per cent., or 1 in 3 4/7, and Increases. Although the lj£tle "FIAT” has only a f-qur-cylinder engine of 65 by 1.10 min. bore and stroke, and carried ite full load, it made the climb on two oc- . casions without any hesitation, and without any signs of overheating. This climb was hot of a competitive nature, for the piston displacement of the car made it ineligible for the speed test, but was undertaken at that time in order that the many sportsmen present might pass their verdict upon the officially certified gradient. The performance is instructive that this car will negotiate those steep hills which, up to now, were thought beyond the possibility of any but the most powerfully engined.
