(By “Motliroa”.) Asbhurst races on Wednesday next. The Takapuna meeting opens this day week. Favorites returned four first and two second dividends at Levin. The Waverley trainer ‘‘Billy” Dwyer scored a first with Kula and a second with Cochineal, a well-named daughter of All Red and Peroneal. A ton of money went on Kikini, who has been winning lately, and the Merry Moments mare was unlucky to be beaten by Rose of Athens, who had all the best of the start and the running throughout. Ashley Reed rode Festivity in a most nonchalant manner in th. Horowhenua Cup, and it is to be hoped that none of his followers suffered with heart disease. He only let Festivity’s head go a few strides from the post, and won by a "smile” that might have been a "mile”. Percy Johnson’s horse Hallowmas has had a couple of - good advertisements lately. Stork winning the Mitchelson Cup and Festivity the Horowhenua Cup. These victories give Hallowmas a lift of £l7OO on the sires’ winning list. Passenger made a promising debut over hurdles at. Horowhenua, but owed a lot to Alan Macdonald’s fine riding. Toddy, Battle Song, Gay Boy and War Loan kept things moving from the jump off. and,' when War Loan was having his name called. Passenger swept past and won in fast time—2min 46 2-5 War Lnan is a good, game hurdler, and after taking on and beating horse- after horse in the Hurdles ar. Levin, just failed to weather it out with a speedy customer like Passenger. War Loan is worth backing now, and may have better luck If produced at Ashhurst next Wednesday. Vindictive was a strong order in the Hack Welter on Wednesday, but was made too much use of, and was stone cold below the 'distance. Kuia (A. Reed) then cleared out and won in hollow fashion from Kyoto, who just beat Kail (All Blaek—Miss Wiggs) for second money. Both winner and runner-up paid good prices. The maidens at Levin (not meaning the Maori wahines, of course) were not a good lot. Rugby, a three-year-old gelding by All Black—Effort, was a scalding hot favorite, and, getting the best of the start, led all the way, but had to be ridden out to win narrowly from Cochineal, who appeared to be unlucky to lose. This pair carried the bulk of the money, the third horse, Panache (Panmure— Parera) being an outsider.
Amongst the “also ran’t division in the Maiden were Pantier (Panmure—Footstep), Kumenga (Provocation —White Heather), Pleasure (Merry Moments—Heatherlea Lass), Rimutaka (Treadmill—-Rene), Satin (Sarto — Ladine), Manchester (San Fran—Brilliant Step), and Santiago (San Fran—Dolly Fisher). Of these Santiago, Rimutaka and Pantier showed Bwet paeo. Bimutoka is a half*
brother to Printemps, and is said to go very fast.
Celmisia tlireatened to start a hot favorite in the Levin Hack Handicap, but while going out to do her preliminary canter she took charge of O. McCarten, and lobbed along for about three miles. Permission was granted to withdraw the mare, as she wq.s in a bad way. Those "early birds” who had backed her (there were 21 tickets rung up on the tote before she left the birdcage) lost their money. This was only a trifle to the amount which the bookmakers held—and still hold! There is bound to be a lot of argument over this, but the Rules of Racing are quite clear on the point. With Celmisia out of the road, the public went solidly for Kikini, with Cream de Menthe, Lord Usk and Country Life next in demand. Rose of Athens was first out, followed by Kikini, and nothing else had a chance, the former holding out long enough to just give the judge something to decide upon. Melting Moments was a poor third, followed by Demoness. The last-named is a five-year-old daughter of Demosthenes, from the old Carbine mare Mongonui. Neither Creme de Menthe nor Country Life were in the picture at any stage of the race. Detroit and Beloved declined their engagements in the Horowhenua Cup, but a good field of a dozen went to the post. Festivity, with A. Reed up, was backed down nearly to evens, and Red Bob (who had been showing great form on the tracks) also had a big following. Kilrush, American Behuty and Tari were best supported of the others. Tari and Astinome made play for a mile, with Kilrush and Matatua handy. Tari left the rails in the straight, allowing Kilrush to dash up and take the lead, with Festivity coming up gradually on the outside. Kilrush looked a certain winner until a few strides from the post, where Festivity put in a sharp "dab” and just got home. Tari was a fair third, followed by Matatua, Red Bob and Sweet Song. Red Bob had a very rough passage throughout, and should not be condemned for Wednesday’s failure. Scratchings reduced the field in the Juvenile Handicap to half a dozen, and Ares (ikartian —Paphia) was an odds-on choice. They were | a green lot, and Pirouette made the most of an indifferent start. Mr. Alexander’s filly, however, ran all over the course, together with Bonrina, and Ares, who pursued a straight track, won nicely from Bonrina, with Pirouette handy. The last-named is very fast, as I her breeding (Boniform —Peirene) suggests, and when she learns to go straight will win good money.
The McDonald Welter saw only two horses seriously backed, Borealis and Ruatara, and after the latter had made most of the running Bell brought Borealis along with a well-timed run, and beat him on the post. Automoana. and Nursing Sister both shaped well, and should win shortly. A big field lined up for the concluding event, the Hokio Hack Handicap, and Paphian was backed as if it was all over. He was first | away, and had every chance, but Jackaroo (Hymettus—ldeala) beat him pointless in the run home, and Projector finished right up third, with Gallia next. AMYTHAS TEE BRILLIANT. That Amythas retains that fine dash of brilliancy that camae to him at three years old bQ has furnished ample proof, and the interesting feature of his performances is that he can both sprint and stay. In his second engagement this season ho carried 10.3 to victory in a. six-furlong race, and on Wednesday lie led the field home In the Canterbury Cud. when he compassed the two miles and a-quarter attached to that race in the splendid time of 3m. 555., and, what is more, won easily. Up to date Amythas has contested 36 races, and his record stands as follows: Un-
1st. 2nd. 3rd. placed At 2yrs 3 0 2 7 At 3yrs 12 0 0 3 At 4yrs. ............... 2100 At 5yrs. . 4 0. 0 2 21 1 2 12
