DISTRICT NEWS.

URUTI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) On Thursday, November 10, the Uruti Hall was the scene of a large gathering to bid farewell to Mr. and Mrs. MeAllum and their daughter, Mrs. Matheson, who have • been settlers for some years past, and always have been willing to give a helping hand in whatever has been needed for the advancement pf the Uruti district. , Dancing was indulged in until near the hour of ten, when Mr. C. Butt gave a very appropriate speech, presenting Mr. MeAllum with a divan ar« chair, and Mrs. Nicholas presenting Mrs. MeAllum with a three tier silver cake stand with doulton ivare plates, and to Mrs. Matheson a silver frame with her initials suitably engraved. Mr. MeAllum responded, thanking the settlers for their thoughtfulness, and especially mentioning the kindness that was shown to him from all, during I: Is recent long illness. He also mentioned that he hoped to see his friends cf this district many times yet, as he did not intend forsaking them for all time. Mr. E. A. Jones, junr., made an efficient M.C. while Miss R. Murray, in her usual capable manner, was pianist, extras being played by Miss N. Murray and Miss M. Mcßae. During the evening a'vocal solo, “Memories” was rendered by Mr. C. Denman and for an encore she gave “When the Great Red Dawn is Shining,” the accompaniments being played by Miss B. Sowry. Another vocal solo, “Canterbury Bells,” was rendered by Miss Sowry. A sumptuous supper was handed round, and dancing was brought to a close shortly after midnight, owing to the majority of settlers being exceptionallj’ busy with both milking and shearing.

On Monday, November 14, a meeting was held in the hall, to discuss the question of starting a choral society in the Uruti district. The number present si:owed that many are keen that such a society should be started, and which has long been needed in this district. Now that a move has been made, Intending members hope that it will be a great success. It was decided that a preliminary practice should be held next Thursday, November 24, after which another meeting will be held to elect a committee etc. The Bishop of Auckland, accompanied by Archdeacon Evans, the Rev. Gavin, and Mr. Sell, paid a visit to Uruti on Tuesday last and the Bishop gave a most interesting address to a fair congregation in the Uruti Hall. We are pleased to be able to report that Mr. C. Barnitt, who has been in the New Plymouth Hospital for some two months past. Is now back again. The usual Saturday night dances are ,still in full swing. No doubt these dancing classes, during the last few months, have been a great pleasure to the young people, as on now entering the hall at one of these recent classes cannot help noticing the great improvement that has been made amongst the younger folk. Another item well worth notice is the boon, as a financial business, these classes have been to the hall committee, of which Mr. Aubrey is secretary. As busy as everybody is, no one seems to want these classes brought to an end, which shows bow enjoyable they have been made. WAI-TOI-TOI—-URENUL (From Our Own Correspondent.) The annual general meeting of the Urenul Sports Club was held in the hall on Thursday evening last. There was a large attendance of members. The chair was occupied by Mr. R. H. Pigott. The balance sheet showed a credit of £l7 14s. On the motion of Mr. Pigott, seconded by Mr. Rumbal, the balance sheet was adopted. Mr. W. T. Jennings was elected patron, and Mr. A. H. Halcombe president. Last year’s vice-presidents were re-elected, as well as the committee. The executive also remains the same, Mr. L. O’Neill being added to the number. M. Beauchamp was appointed a judge, whilst the election of handicapper and starter were left to the committee. Considerable discussion ensued as to whether the sports should be ©pen or local, and on the motion of Mr. Fitzgerald, seconded by Mr. Bleakley, it was agreed that they be open. It was decided that the date of meeting should be one week after the Waitara sports, provided the date is suitable. It was proposed by Mr. Tate and seconded by Mr. Breddow, that Mr. R. H. Pigott be appointed to represent the club at ; the conference. It is stated that there is now some £l’ll to the credit of the club in , the Post Office Savings Bank, £5O of this 1 sum is ear-unnrked for improvement to the sports ground, carrying a £ for £5 subsidy from the domain board. This should enable some very substantial alterations to be effected during the coming season and add greatly to the successful carrying out of the gatherings. The usual meeting of the Ati Awa troop of Frontiersmen will be held in the Urenui Library on Friday evening, the 18th inst., instead of the 25th, the latter date being appointed for the annual dinner of the Paritutu troop in New Plymouth, to which the members of the fonmer have been kindly invited. No doubt as many comrades as possible will endeavor to be present, and it is unnecessary to state will be assured of a hearty welcome from the town troop. it te uftdKMood tUt a publte swtetlng i* to

be held in the Urenul Hall in about a fortnight’s time for the purpose of forming a football club for the coming season. The reason for holding the meeting so early is to enable to the necessary affiliation forms and registration of colors, etc., to be gone through. Groat interest is being evinced by a number of enthusiasts, and it is probable a team will he entered in next season's junior competi-
