HILL CLIMBING WITH “FIAT” CARS. z REMARKABLE example of hillclimbing ability has been nurnished by the new 10-15 h.p. “FIAT” light car, known as Model 501. A motor cycle hill climbing competition having been organised over the Rampe de la Donzelle, near Geneva, Switzerland, the owner of one of these little “FIATS” decided *to give a demonstration of its ability to tackle even freak hills with a gradient considerably in excess of the maximum the car is guaranteed to climb on first The Rampe de la Donzelle is 340 yards in length. Towards the middle its gradrent is 28 per cent., or 1 in 3 4/7, and increases. Although the little “FIAT” has only a four-cylinder engine of 65 by 110 mm. bore and stroke, and carried its full load, it made the climb on two occasions withoiit any hesitation, and without any signs of overheating. This climb was not of a competitive nature, for the piston displacement of the car made it ineligible for the speed test, but was undertaken at that time in order that the many sportsmen present' might pass their verdict upon the officially Certified gradient. The performance is instructive that ftliis ear will negotiate even those steep hills which, up to now, were thought be,yond the possibility of any but the most powerfully engined.
