DOMINION PRODUCE.

MARKETING ARRANGEMENTS.

IMPORTANT" PROPOSALS?* ' MR. T. R. LEES FOR LONDON. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Wellington, Last Jfight. The Producers’ Committee met, in Wellington yesterday to consider shipping freights, the marketing of New Zealand produce overseas and other matters that have been attracting the attention of the producers lately. The Minister for Agriculture (Hon. W. Nosworthy) attended the meeting in the morning and placed certain matters before the delegates on behalf of the Government. He mentioned the proposal already made by the Prime Minister that the producers should establish a board to attend to the business end of their industry and should arrange for their representatives to watch the marketing of produce in London. The Minister for Agriculture told the committee that the Government had decided to send Mr. T. R. Lees, had of the Imperial Supplies Department and chairman of the New Zealand Wool Committee, to London on a special mission. Mr. Lees has had exceptional opportunities during recent years to gather knowledge regarding the handling of' New Zealand produce. Scores of millions of pounds’ worth of meat, wool, butter and cheese passed through his hands during the period of the Imperial purchase scheme, and he was brought into intimate contact with many phases of the Dominion’s export trade. He will make a close investigation of the marketing and distributing arrangements in London and will report to the Government. He will also attend to some out • standing matters connected with the Imperial purchases. The committee sat during the day. It will report the result of its deliberations to the Minister, and possibly to a larger conference of producers. It is understood that the committee has approved generally of" the suggested establishment of a board of farmers and of the appointment of a representative in London. It appears that there is not much chance of securing any improvement in freights before the end of this year, but some further representations may be made to the shipping companies.
