First Innings 450 sduTH AFRICA, First Innings ... jemcw 243 Second Innings. Zulch. b Gregory ... 2 Frank, not out 106 Lindsay, b Gregory 29 Taylor, c Malley, b Gregory SO Nourse, not out 79 Extras 15 Total (for three wickets) 211 The weather was perfect, the wicket good and the attendance 10,000. The opening luck of the Africans continued bad. Lindsay, after adding five to his over-night score, played Gregory on, but after that the character of the game completely changed. Frank, playing like a rock, with the assistance of Taylor tired the fast bowlers out, and Macdonald tried medium pace Leg theory. The fielding was of the keenest, five being gathered in a circle round short leg, but without success.’’
The pair carried the score to 149 and then Taylor edged Gregory into the slips after a sound and chanceless display. Nourse followed. The bowling was often changed, and brilliant fielding kept down the runs, but the impregnable defence continued. Collins at one time bowled 14 overs for two runs. The bowlers found the hard, sun-baked wicket distressing, and, after they were tired out, concentrated on keeping the runs down. The batsmen played a dogged game, waiting for loose deliveries. Fxftnk reached the century in 335 minutes. This partnership completely altered the complexion of the game. Neither man gave a chance. They were together 165 minutes and added 162 runs. When stumps were drawn the crowd rushed the ground and shouldered Frank. There was great enthusiasm, the Australians joining in the ovation. DOMINION COUNCIL.
