THEFT BY ROAD BOARD CLERK. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland. Nov. 14. Tn the Police Court, Cyril H. Edgecombe, for three years clerk to the Matakohe Road Board, pleaded guilty to the theft of £llO5 of the board’s money paid in rates. He was committed for sentence, bail in £lOO being allowed. MISSIONS TO SEAMEN. Auckland, Nov. 14. A sports carnival in aid of the Missions to Seamen was held in the Domain on Saturday. The athletic events were conducted by the Auckland centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, and were keenly contested. In the hop, step and jump competition G. A. Plummer established a New Zealand record, covering 46ft. 4in. The previous record was 46ft. Tin. ESCAPE OF A PRISONER. Taumarunui, Nov. 14. William Arthur Edward Atkinson effected his escape from the Taumarunui lock-up on Saturday nigllt between 8 and 10.30. Atkinson was arrested on a charge of theft of £6, and was to appear before the Bench at Ohakune to-day. While the police were on duty in the town the prisoner got out of his cell by manipulating the bolt through the peep-hole. He then removed the iron bars and smashed a small window, through which he squeezed. Afterwards he appears to have broken into the police station and taken a service revolver, but no ammunition. Atkinson is about 18 years of age, and is a native of the Dominion.
