WRECK OF THE PERTH.

| NO HOPE FOR- STEAMER. VALUABLE TIMBER CARGO. By Telegraph—Press Association. Greymouth, Last Night. “The steamer Perth remains pivoted in the same position as on Sunday, opposite the north tiphead, and no hope of saving her is now entertained. It is feared the next westerly winds will cause the vessel’s back to break. A portion may slide into the channel, and £12,000 worth of timber cargo may be half salved. Some fittings are already breaking in the water in the hold four feet below the deckline. The hull has a list landwards, but swings on the centre when the tide is in. The crew lost their belongings. It is hoped to save the wireless to-morrow. Greymouth, Nov. 14. The Perth is reported to be badly holed and full of water. No attempt has been made to tug her off as there is a probability of her sinking if moved. The crew visited the ship at low tide to endeavor to obtain their personal belongings. The ship has shifted slightly since last night and if a good southwester came, combined with the present spring tide there would be prospects of beaching the Perth on the Cobden beach, facilitating salvage. Tfie crew signed on at Melbourne and are now billeted in the town. A relief fund has been started and the commercial travellers are holding a public concert to-night.
