The meeting called last night for the purpose of reviving the Boy Scout movement in Stratford was attended by a big number of people interested, and the movement has now been placed on a sound footing. The Mayor (Mr. J. \V. McMillan) presided and a strong committee was set up, Mr. T. G. Grubb being elected secretary-and treasurer. The Mayor offered two gold medals for the scouts gaining highest honors in fire brigade work. Mr. Grubb offered to take a class of scouts for instruction in fire drill. Mr. F. D. Gaffaney offered a medal for the scout showing the highest efficiency in the year’s work, and Mr. Beaumont offered to act as boxing instructor. It was decided that tribute should be paid to Major Sandford, Commissioner of the Taranaki Scouts for his good work. The scouts are to commence practi£j immediately for their concert in aid of funds, which is to be held after Christmas. Acting-Scoutmaster C. Winter received his commission. He has had a good experience in scout work and is qualified to make the Stratford troop, a first-class organisation. Meetings are to be held weekly, and all who are interested are invited to be present and see the boys at work. GENERAL. Last night, between the hours of 12 and 1 o’clock the 50 candle power electric light globe, which was installed in the “silent policeman” at the corner of Regan Street and Broadway, was stolen by snipe person or persons unknown. The opinions regarding the usefulness or otherwise of the innovation which were expressed to-day were many and various, but there is no doubt that the observance of the necessity to go round the right side of the dome minimises to a very great extent the risk of any traffic accidents. The Midhirst Tennis Clul? held a very enjoyable dance last night in aid of the club funds, and those who were present will be glad to hear that it is 'Mended to hold another similar function at a later, date. The, music for last night’s dance was supplied free by Mrs. Bianchi, and extras were played by Miss Ki veil and Mr. C. Phillips. The supper arrangements were carried out by Mesdamcs Mail, Smith, Snookes and Spray, and the M.C.’s were Misses Syknond* and Ki veil and Messrs. Sherson and Spray. Mr. W. A. Brown, a cheniist, arrived in Stratford, has taken over the business formerly carried bn by Mr. J. F. Y’oung. Mr. Brown, who had considerable experience in England in dispensing and general pharmacy, was for nearly o years attached to the British Army Medical Corps, during which time he was chief dispenser to several general hospitals, and was also in charge of a base depot of medical stores. . He is a member of the Pharmacy Societies of Great Britain and New Zealand. The Stratford cricket team’journeyed to Midhirst on Saturday and defeated Midhirst. Stratford scored (53 runs (Jamieson 18) and Midhirst 25. It will eoon be time to get your Christmas mail away to the Old Country and readers are,, advised to order their private greeting cards in good time. A splendid range of sample cards can be seen at Wilson Bros. Printers and Stationers, Stratford, and orders placed with them will be completed promptly and carefully.
