A QUESTION OF ADVERTISING.

AUCKLAND IS “ALTOGETHER TOO MODEST.” A scheme for raising funds for advertising Auckland was definitely taken up by ire Rotary Chib at a recent luncheon. Mr. R. A. Laidlaw reminded the Rotarians that at their hist gathcilng ii had been suggested that £5OO should be raised for the purpose named, pending the formal ion of a progressive league, and that the sgme should be entrusted fur e: pendiiure to the Advertising Club. “In Auckland we do not appreciate our eiimate as we should,'’ declared Mr. Laidlaw, “and we have not only a splendid climate, but other attraction -. We ought to advertise in such a way as to make every Southern business man decide to spend his declining years in our sunny citv, (.Laughter.) By wise publicity’ and’ good advice it might be possible attract here, not only business men retiring, hut many of the bright and brainy younger men of the South. Thus Auckland’s prosperity would be increased, and there would bo better roads, better tramway services, and facilities of all kinds. Dunedin and Christchurch had put out columns of advertising matter which should shame Auckland, said MrLn idlaw, He moved that the Rotary Club get behind this motion to raise £s“'.l for advertising ?\u<-kiand. An idea which Mr. G. M, Fowlds had was to ask thirty business films to donate £lO each, and forty more io give £5 each. That would aggregate the £5OO mentioned. With such a sum to spend he •felt sure the citizens would be made to realise that something was moving to put Auckland on the map. (.Applause.) The motion was carried, the president cf the chib (the Hon. Geo. Fowlds) re marking that Auckland had been altogether too modest in the past. (Laughter,)
