CHARGES OF THEFT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Taumarunui, Nov. 11. In connection with the series of thefts of mail matter ’from the Post Office here Edgar Gilbert, James Elliott and Gregory Onion appeared before a Justice of the Peace on several charges of stealing money, goods, and postal notes. One charge against Elliott was of stealing £S in money from a letter sent by a settler to the bank; the letter failed to reach the bank. Detective Cummings said 50 to 100 complaints had been received regarding the missing packets, but steps were now being taken to prevent a recurrence. Gilbert pleaded not guilty to -four charges and was committed for trial. Onion was ordered to come up for sentence. Elliott pleaded not guilty to four charges and was committed for trial.
