Epitaph cost 1500 guineas as a yearling, but has proved a great bargain, having won £2466 Ln stakes already. Amythas Simply couldn’t go alow enough •’or the opposition in the Canterbury Cup, ;-nd he will take some beading o4i in the Stead Cup this afternoon. The Waikato sire Quin Abbey has been responsible for a number of winners lately. His progeny won live of eight events at Hamilton, and Tinohoro, Snake and Prince Abbey scored for him at Ellerslie. Affectation is running consistently now, and with 9.3 does not appear to be harshly treated in the Members' Handicap at Riccarton. In the past Kllbroney gelding gave his trainer a lot of trouble, but ha now seems to have come right. The three hurdle races contested so far at die C.J.C. meetlirg have been won by North Island horses, but to-day the southerners will have tilings to themselves. Possibly Achilledes may prove the best of a bad lot. Alan McDonald went to Riccarton to ride Ore Ore the first day, but another jockey had been engaged, so McDonald took (he mount on Maniahera and best Ore Ore by a head. On the second day Maniahera’s engaged jockey caone on the scene, so McDonald accepted the mount on Ore Ore, and this time beat Maniabera by a similar margin! Funny, isn't it? The present financial stringency is reflected in recent totaitsator returns, the aggregate decrease at the Wanganui, Hawke's Bay. Wellington, Auckland and Canterbury meetings being £130,000. Figures like these make one pause and wonder if racing chibs, in framing their program:;.:.s for meetings later in the season, are acting wisely in giving away such big stakes as they have decided -upon. Many forthcoming meetings will be run at a loss;, that seems certain.
The Fendalton Handicap will keep pickers busy to-day, the seventeen carded offering a wide field for speculation. Foo Chow, Pluto, Kil'gour and Almoner appear to have, more than rough chances, and whatever beats KUgour should just about win.
Humboldt, a three-year-old gelding by Sunny Lake—Medley, has been showing fine form at the Canterbury meeting, and ho should have a big following if saddled up for the Creasy Welter this afternoon. Uthers that maj - be well hacked include Bon Spec, Fulsome and Backsheesh, and of the trio Fulsome reads best.
Tamatete's downfajl in the Jockey Club Handicap on Wednesday brought a heap of money into the bags (or pockets) of the layers. The Fordell crack was nicely treated with 8.4, and judging by the talk in Wanganui it was only a case of putting in ana taking out. Tamatete’s decisive defeat once again proves the uncertainty of racing.
Another expensive failure was Inan at Ellerslie, but report says that’ she was knocked all over the course, and never given a chance. Judging by the report of rough riding at Ellerslie and Riccarton recently, things «re not run so strictly at the metropolitan meetings as we are led to believe by the hqfh-brows who throw out their chests at the Racing Conference, and put the blame for all turf irregularities on to the. diminutive shoulders of the little country clubs!
If ever a horse deserved first prize it was Coolante, who annexed the Publican’s Purse at Ardlethan (N.S.W.) after three races. There were only three starters, Coolante being favorite. From a false start all completed the course, Coolante finishing first. Later in the day the race was re-run, anfi a similar happening occurred. At the third attempt the starter got them away satisfactorily, and the result was the same. Altogether Coolante ran two miles and a quarter—the race being a six furlongs one—and for all this took first prize, £B. It was hardly worth the trouble, anyway 1
A prad named Lawnmower, having won ’.he Queensland Cup and Derby (the cables tell us), may be said to have effectively downed the weeds in Brisbane recently. Oh for a firm of bookmakers named Reaper and Binder. Then would all the "heads" be brought to Mother Earth, tied in bundles, and cost aside to be soundly "threshed.”
Reta Peter once again won the richiy-en-dowed New Zealand Trotting Cup, but the result was unsatisfactory, and most scribes' agree that Sherwood should have retained the. thick end of the stake. It was a wretched race, from all accounts, and a poor advertise ment for the style of starting in vogue at Addington. There was a long delay at the peg, ajid from a false start more than half the field traversed four furlongs. When ' rhe word was finally given Man o’ War. who was favorite, was slow in getting into his stride, while Asturio was left. Sherwood, driven py tts owner, F. Holmes, buried everything for si»eed over the last two furlongs, and won with ridiculous ease, but an objection wa» lodged for crossing at the top of the straight, and th© stewards reversed the positions, placing Reta Peter first and Sherwood second. To udd insult to injury they fined Holmes £25. According to one good judge the interference was trifling and quite accidental, and could have bad no effect on the result whatever. Man o’ War had no chance from the word "go,” and toiled painfully in the rear all the way. The time recorded, 4.29, has only been beaten twice, by Author Dillon. who ran 4.26 2-5 in 1918, and by Adelaide Direct, who carved it out in 427 4-5 in the previous year.
