HEAVY TRAFFIC.
QUESTION OF A LICENSE. The licensing of motor wagons was referred to at yesterday’s meeting of the Egmont County Council. Cr. O’Brien urged that owners of all lorries plying for hire and damaging the roads should be compelled to. take out a license. Cr. Tosland said that the new by-laws gave the council power ?to levy these licenses, and <deps should be taken to see that the by-laws were carried out. Cr. O’Brien moved that notice be given that prosecutions will follow unless licenses are taken out within 14 days. Cr. Ferguson pointed out that there would be hardships, as a man living in another county might only use half a mile of county road, whilst in other eases a man might have to take out licenses in three counties, and might only pass through them occasionally Some amicable arrangement should be made. The clerk said that the license fees applied to motor wngons and taxis. Cr. Tosland seconded the resolution. Or. Chapman considered that a lorry was entitled to travel over another county’s road, as long as it did not co •any business in that county. The clerk said that if a wagon visited any of the seven counties attached to the conference it would be liable to pay a £6 license in each. The resolution was carried. Or. Tosland also moved that dairyfactories should bo notified to have their carting done before the end'of March. Cr. O’Brien seconded the resolution, which was carried.
