The friends of Mrs. Ivor John, of New Plymouth and late of Hawera, will be pleased to hear that she is progressing satisfactorily after a recent serious operation. His Honor, Mr. Justice Reed, left Wellington on Monday on circuit duty at Palmerston North, Wanganui, and New Plymouth. He was accompanied by his associate, Mr. A. Hamilton. The death occurred at Masterton last week of the Rev. B. L. Thomas, at one time chairman of the Congregational •Union of New Zealand. Deceased was 69 years of age. Superintendent A. H. Wright, of Auckland, has been appointed Commissioner of Police in succession to Commissioner O’Donovan, who retires at the end of next month.

Among resignations received at yesterday’s meeting of the Taranaki Education Board was that of Mr. F. J. Cumberworth, head teacher at Mahoe, and a resolution was carried placing on record the board’s appreciation of his work during 37 years’ with the department. The death occurred at Wellington on Sunday of the Rev. W. A. Evans, minister of the Constable Street Congregational Church, who had been laid aside by illness for the past two or three years.
