TE ROTI—OPUNAKE RAILWAY.

WORK Td BE CONTINUED. QUESTION OF FINANCE. Recognising the importance of the Te Roti-Opunake railway to the district, particularly as regards its relation to the ever-increasing cost of road maintenance, the Egmont County Council has lost no opportunity of urging on the Government the necessity of speedily pushing the work on to completion. At the last meeting of the council it was resolved to send a deputation to Wellington comprising the chairman (Cr. S. Campbell), Crs. R. Ferguson and W. C. Green.

At yesterday’s meeting the. chaiwnan reported that the deputation had waited on the Minister of Public Works and had received a good hearing. They were told that there were more men employed at present on that railway than on any other branch railway in New Zealand. He said that if the Minister of Finance would provide the money he would be pleased to go on with the work. He also stated that the men at present employed there would not be withdrawn. The deputation also interviewed the Premier, who said he recognised the necessity for the railway. The only thing he was afraid of was that he might not be able to get the money. He assured them that if he could get the money he would have the work pushed\ on as quickly as possible. The chairman said that they had got the rails and sleepers ready and would start laying the line fa Manaia next week. As soon as they got the rails to Kapuni they would be better able to push on the line. The work was not being pushed on as quickly as he would like.

Cr. O’Brien considered that the deputation had done very well. Their visit would certainly lead to the considerable advancement of the railway. He moved that the hearty thanks of the council be conveyed to the department and that the appreciation be recorded in the Minutes.

■Cr. Tosland, in seconding, said the fact that they had an assurance that the ninety men were to be kept on would more than repay the expenses of the deputation. This was carried.
