Penn has been confined to his bed for the past fortnight, and will ■probably not be about again for another two weeks. It is understood, that he has been ordered a month’s rest by the doctor. Messrs. Campbell Jackson and A. J. Barr, who represented the Stratford A. and P. Association at the Manawatu show at Palmerston North, have returned to Stratford with a large number of entries for the local show on November 23 and 24. A very appropriate recognition of his good services was tendered Mr. W. E. Burley, choirmaster, at the Methodist choir practice on Friday night, when Mr. R. H. White, on behalf of the choir, presented him with a silver-mounted baton as a token of the esteem and good wishes of those under his leadership. Mr. Burley expressed thanks for the gift and his great appreciation of the good wishes which accompanied it, STRATFORD CRICKET CLUB. A meeting was held to-night to complete the formation of the Stratford Cricket Club. Mr. A. Nelson presided over an attendance of about 20. It was reported that about 40 were willing to play, and it was decided to run teams on both Thursday and Saturday. The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr. R. Masters, M.P.; president, Mr. A. Nelson; vice-presidents, Messrs. J. W. McMillan, P. Skoglund, T. Smith, H. E. Abraham, and H, D. Hill; hon. secretary, Mr. A. Nelson; general committee, Messrs. C. Massey, J. Looker, C. Gatton, A. Klee, J. Freyne: selection committee, Messrs. A. Nelson, L. H. Giblin and J. Looker. The annual subscription was fixed at £1 Is, and for boys under 17 10s 6d. It was decided to affiliate with the South Taranaki Cricket Association. A match has been arranged to take place at Stratford against Midhirst next Saturday, and a practice will be held tomorrow (Tuesday) evening. GENERAL ITEMS. Ngaere Gardens yesterday attracted a good crown which would doubtless have been much larger had the weather been less dull and threatening. Despite the dullness, the entrance to the gardens resembled the gates of a racecourse, with a large number of cars, motor cycles and horse-drawn vehicles for many yards along each side of the road. The Opunake Band, which was the special attraction, rendered an acceptable programme of music during the afternoon. It will soon be- time to get your Christmas mail away to the Old Country and readers are advised to order their private greeting cards in good time. A splendid range of sample' cards can be seen at Wilson Bros.. Printers and Stationers, Stratford, and orders placed with them will be completed promptly and carefully.
