DANGEROUS GOODS.
CONTROL UNDER BY-LAWS. The by-laws in relation to the storing of dangerous goods were referred to In a report received from the finance committee at last night’s meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council. The committee recommended that when amendments were being made to the bylaws the council should take into consideration the advisability of making regulations having for their object: (a) The limitation, and possibly the prohibition, within the brick area of the borough of storage, in other than brick, stone or concrete buildings, of benzine and certain other classes of dangerous goods; and (b) the defining of dangerous goods areas within the borough. The object of the recommendation was explained in the following note attached to the committee’s report: The New Plymouth by-laws are fairly comprehensive and, if strictly enforced, provide ample safeguard. Up to 200 gallons in the aggregate of benzine and other classes of dangerous goods may be stored in outside sheds at least 20 feet clear of all other buildings. If a fireproof store approved by the inspector be constructed a maximum of 1600 gallons may be kept. In addition, licenses may be granted by the council for bulk stores constructed to the satisfaction of the inspector, the particular locality of the store to be approved by the council. On April 1. 1922, however, these bylaws will be superseded by the Government regulafons. The council will still have power to make by-laws dealing with dangerous goods. These by-laws however, must be made in accordance with the provisions of the Explosives and Dangerous Goods Amendment Act, 1920, and wil) not come into operation Until approved by the Minister.
