WAR MEMORIAL.
NEW PLYMOUTH PROPOSAL. MATTERS REGARDING SITE. Following on the movement which is afoot in New Plymouth to establish a war memorial park on the vacant site opposite the railway station, a letter was read at last night’s meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council from the Harbor Board, as owners of part ot the land which it has been proposed should be acquired. The board intimated that it was prepared to offer the sections for public competition for lease on the usual conditions, or as an alternative it was prepared to consider the question of an exchange of land of equal value. When the letter was read, the Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson) said this introduced the question of whether the council was prepared to grant the borough sections opposite the, station for the war memorial. A decision would have to »e arrived at shortly, and he suggested that a set evening should be stated on which the council would discuss the matter. In reply to Cr. J. Brown the general manager (Mr. F. T. Bellringer) said the land had been set aside for up special purpose, but the intention was'to erect a Town Hall or municipal theatre on the site. The Major pointed out that whatever the intention might have been at that time, it was never carried into effeot in so far as stipulating the purpose in the' title of the land or including it in the Act. It was decided that decision be deferred till next Monday night, the Mayor intimating that in the meantime old files concerning the acquisition of the site by the borough could be looked up, and this would give councillors some idea of what took place.
