MANAIA.
TOWN BOARD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) At the monthly meeting of the Town Board, held on Thursday evening, there were present: Mr. J. G. Craig (chairman), and Crs. N. C. Innes, J. Hickey, J. J. Meldon, and G. Edwards. Mr. J. S. Murray, surveyor, forwarded new plahs of the cemetery, of which he had completed the survey. In an accompanying letter he stated that there was sufficient space for further exten-sions.—-Received. Writing in reference to iho water and drainage loan, the superintendent of the State Advances Department stated t‘*iat debentures Nos. 2 and 3 had been duly received. He asked for particulars of the expenditure to date.—lnformation to be supplied.
Arrangements were made for the opening of the Women’s Rest, and a committee, consisting of Crs. Hickey, Meldon and Edwards, was appointed to report on prices for furnishing the rest. In response to an inquiry made relative to the position of the township in connection with the Electric Power Board, a letter was received from Mr. W. J. Tristram, secretary of the board, stating that the proposed scheme would include the town district as an “outer area.” In this case the Town Board would incur no liability; neither would it be entitled to representation on the power board,-but if at any time 25 per cent, of the ratepayers of the town district desired to be brought into the area of supply, they might do so. It was decided that the letter bo recorded in the minutes, by reason of the statement referring to the Town Board’s freedom from liability.—lt was resolved that the Town Board become an associate of the power board. GENERAL. General regret is felt at the death, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon, of Mrs. Caddy, wife of Mr. J. Caddy, a well-known contractor, of Manaia. The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon, and was followed by a large number of friends. Many beautiful wreaths bore testimony to the esteem in which the late Mrs. Caddy was held. The burial service was conducted by the Rev. A. 0. Swainson, and the pall-bearers were Messrs. J. A. Cosgrove, J. J. Meldon, F. McCarthy, J. Silvester, A. Franklin, and C. Hui.ge.r. The party of juvenile performers from the Salvation Army - Boys’ Home in El t ham visited Manaia on Wednesday, and were accorded a hearty reception both for their band programme in the Octagon and their evening demonstration in the Town Hall. The children of the State School are busily engaged in preparing for a sale of work to be held on Tuesday, by means of which it is hoped to raise a substantial sum for the tennis courts fund.
