A SERIOUS CHARGE. By Telegraph. Association Dunedin, Nov. 5. .lames K. Hayne appeared on reA mand on a. charge of unlawfully using an instrument to procure a miscarriage. The chief detective announced the death of the woman Violet Atkins at Timaru this morning, which no doubt involves a murder charge. The magistrate remanded accused to November 10 on the understanding that there will be a further remand to Timaru. on the 17th. A MINE RE-OPENED. Greymouth, Nov. 5. Arrangements have been made to resume work in the Dobson mine, which was previously suspended through a wages difficulty. The arrears of pay have been paid, and a start made to put down a bore. It is hoped to strike the main seam within a week. INSURANCE CLAIM SETTLED. Auckland, Nov. 5. •.t ne Government Life Insurance Office has handed a cheque of £5OOO, the insurance money claimed on the life of the late Percy Smallfield, of Hamilton, who was accidentally drowned in the Waikato River, to the executors of deceased. The insurance risks held against the life of Smallfield totalled £15,000, of which the Government Office held £5OOO. /
