MARKETING IN ENGLAND. CRITICISM BY MR. W. T. JENNINGS. The position in respect to the marketing of New Zealand butter in Englajid was the subject of careful enquiry by Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P., during his recent. visit to England. He had a goad opportunity of making investigations, and at Manchester was the guest of the manager of the Co-operative Association, which dealt with over three million people. Mr. Jennings told a Daily News reporter last night that it was surprising to find in London and in other cities that he could not trace any New Zealand butter, though Danish was being displayed for sale at 2/6 and 2/8 per lb. On mentioning this fact to one of the officials of the Co-operative Association he was informed that there were 500,000 boxes of New Zealand butter held in store by the British Government at that time (August). The New Zealand article could not be obtained, though there were buyers who wanted it. Since returning to New Zealand Mr. Jennings remarked that he had read a cable to the effect that the authorities were now selling the butter at a reduction of 11/- per cwt. To most New Zealanders and those interested it was difficult to find where the butter went to after it was sold. The allegation had been made that owing to the fact that the New Zealand article was a superior one it was used to mix up with other brands. After a very complete search Mr. Jennings could not find the New Zealand brand, nor did the retailers seem to be acquainted with it. With regard to the export of meat Mr. Jennings said he saw some Argentine products at Southampton and they looked remarkably good. The beef, at least, seemed to be gaining an advantage over New Zealand beef from the fact that it was chilled and that the exporters had a closer market. In the course of a good many enquiries some complaints were heard about the condition of the New Zealand beef.
