.AUSTRALIA V. SOUTH AFRICA. THE FIRST TEST MATCH. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Nov. G, 5.5 p.m. Capetown, Nov. 5. The Australian cricketers have commenced their first test against South Africa at Durban. The weather was fine, after rain on the previous day, which had not affected the wicket, though the outfield was slow. The attendance was 7000. The Australians won the toss and batted first, Collins and Gregory opening to the bowling of Marx and Nourse. The batsmen opened freely, causing frequent bowling changes until Blanckenburg, and Carter found their length and steadied the scoring. The first wicket fell at 85. Play was very keen, but the fielding was patchy, though sometimes brilliant. Gregory was* twice missed. * Macartney was lively, punishing the bowling. After ills departure the scoring eased until Ryder and Taylor were partnered, putting on 37 for the sixth wicket. Hendry joined Ryder, the pair adding 70 for the seventh wicket, which went at 277. Ryder gave a chance early in the innings, but otherwise Ins was a good allround display. Blanckenburg’s bowling was excellent. He got good speed on, and varied his pace. The South Africans made a poor start a few minutes before the bad light stopped Play. Scores: AUSTRALIA. First Innings.
