WAITARA.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Nov. 4. The monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held on Tuesday evening. There was a good attendance, and Mr. H. E. Vaughan presided. Shipping facilities to the port were again discussed. Direct steamers from Auckland and Wellington were’advocated, one speaker suggesting a locallyowned boat. Others thought the key to the situation was back cargoes of coal from Mokau, and inquiries are to be made in this direction. The question of Home liners calling at the roadstead regular!}’ for produce was mentioned by Mr. .laggs. He thought that if the watersiders were more reasonable in their demands the asset they once had could be got back again. The president mentioned the matter of telephone facilities, and said since the present postmaster had been here a considerable improvement had taken place. The postmaster was asked if the technical working of the system could be improved. Mr. Barnard explained that the system was an antiquated one and the department .would not do anything unless there was a minimum of 200 subscribers. It was recommended that the new exchange hours to be asked for should be between 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. GENERAL. Messrs. Rennie and Co. are advised by the Labor Department that it will not be permissible to keep business establishments open on the Saturday afternoon preceding Christmas I>ay, which this year falls on a Sunday. Friday will therefore have to be looked upon as the main day that week, and shops may keep open until 10 p.m. Tills,’ of course, only applies to towns where the Saturday half-holiday is in vogue.
