RACING COMMISSION.
ITS COST TO THE COUNTRY. OVER FOUR THOUSAND By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The cost of the Racing Commission, whose report has been rendered useless by the rejection of the Gaming Bill, was announced in the House to-day. The Hon. W. Downie Stewart, said o statement had appeared in a section ol the Press of New Zealand to the effect that the recent Racing Commission had cost £lB,OOO. Such a statement had no foundation in fact, and he thought it was a pity that such statements should be made, apparently without adequate inquiry in the proper quarter. He had asked for figures in order to make: a statement to the House,, and these' figures showed that the commission had cost £4374 Ils 9d, with, possibly, a supplementary voucher for £23, which might yet come* in, so it was safe to sav the commission had. not cost more than £4400. The Minister added that although the report of the commission war not vouched for by the House in the debate the other evening it must be remembered that it contained many valuable suggestions in the interests of clean, sport, and that sooner or later these suggestions would Be given effect to, when they would be found wel] worth the money the commission cost.
