The Daily News. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 1921. THE LOAN POLLS.
That all the loan proposals submitted to the ratepayers of New Plymouth on Wednesday should have been carried by decisive majorities is matter for much satisfaction. The smallness of the poll is difficult to account for, considering the large amount of money involved, but it would seem that the great majority of the ratepayers took the carrying of the loans as a matter of course, and so did not trouble to vote. Their abstention does not, of course, denote the existence of a very high civic spirit, though it may be taken as a silent expression of confidence in those who took an active interest in endeavoring to convince the Borough Council of the wisdom of constructing the new hydroelectric tunnel the full size, and having the necessary survey made to ascertain what additional sources of water are available to increase the power., The vote on this question is a direct mandate to the Borough Council to at once proceed with widening and concreting the tunnel, so that no more valuable time should be wasted, it being a matter for regret that time has already been lost. A pleasing feature of the carrying of the £9OOO loan is that it shows that the people of New Plymouth are not merely looking after their own interests, but are keen upon providing electric power for their neighbors. It was unfortunate that the majority of the council took the wrong course, especially in face of the Government engineer’s advice. They now have a clear intimation of what is required, and it is to be hoped they will act with promptitude and energy.
