UNEMPLOYMENT.
MR. HUGHES’ SCHEME. 1 OPENING UP LAND. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Melbourne, Nov. 2. At the Premiere’ Conference, Mr. W. Al. Hughes explained a scheme for solving the problem of unemployment by developing land settlement and ameliorating unemployment in Great Britain by encouraging immigration. The scheme provides for the unification of the gauges on the Australian railways ana the opening up of a large number of farms. He proposed that local unemployed should be first absorbed and thereafter as many of the immigrants as work could be found for be brought to Australia. The condition of the scheme is that a portion of the farms be reserved for British immigrants after become acclimatised and accustomed to local conditions. Air. Hughes states that he believed he could borrow 50 millions to finance the proposal. The conference is discussing the matter.
