COASTAL SERVICE.
REARRANGEMENT OF VESSELS. As a result of representations made by the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, the Union Steam Ship Company has undertaken to make some changes in the Wellington-New Plymouth steamer service. The Wellington chamber on Monday received a letter from the company, stating that it was intended to withdraw die Karamu from her present running at the end of October and substitute the Ka-hika, which would be util-, ised alternately with the Corinna from southern ports and Wellington and New Plymouth. The Corinna would continue to call at Nelson. It was expected that both vessels would, in ordinary circumstances, make a round trip in a fortnight, so that the weekly service from southern ports and from Wellington to New Plymouth should be assured. “We may say,” stated the secretary, “that at present figures we consider the proposed service a great deal ahead of the actual requirements, but we propose to give the running a trial. If the ships can be shown to pay on this trade they will be kept on, but the question of earnings will be Reviewed from time to time.”
It was decided to thank the company for its information, and to forward a copy of the letter to the New Plymouth Chamber of Commerce.
