SHOOTING AFFRAY.
THE SPRINGSTON FRACAS. ACCUSED ACQUITTED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. At the Supreme Court to-day, James Scott Main was acquitted on all charges preferred against him in connection with the Springston shooting affray. Accused gave lengthy evidence indicating that the fracas was due to an assault upon him arising out of remarks passed between Nuttall and himself in the commercial room of an hotel. He admitted drawing a revolver and threatening to shoot if molested. He was on the ground with several on top of him when the revolver went off. Before the shooting accident accused had been struck and kicked and subsequently someone smashed his thumb. In the coursb of his summing up, Mr. Justice Adams suggested to the jury to disregard the evidence, of all but three witnesses. The jury were out for a little over an hour and returned with a verdict of not guilty on all counts, and prisoner was discharged.
