CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. The monthly meeting of the Stratford Chamber of Commerce was held last night. Present: Messrs. J. B. Richards (chairman). J. |V. McMillan, P. .tiompson, C. Martin, W. McDonald. Apologies were received from Messrs. W. P. Kirkwood, S. Mac Alister, D. Malone and W. Mclnnes. The Minister of Public Works (Hon. J. G. Coates) wrote in reply to the Chamber's request for information regarding the tenders received for the new post office that it was not the practice to supply, any particulars for publication as to tenders or estimates until they had been accepted, as this action might prejudice intending tenderers. New tenders would be called for in the New Year. It was decided to bring the matter up at the firs® meeting after the New Year.
As a result of conferences between the president (Mr. Richards), settlers on the East line and the railway Department, two new timetables for the Whangamomona line were drawn up. Correspondence from various local bodies was read and it was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the department to make a decision regarding an amended timetable.
The Minister of Lands (Hon. G. H. Guthrie) wrote stating that a report on the Tangarakau Gorge had been obtained, and it was found that an extension of scenic and forest reserves was desirable, but it was difficult to determine which should be scenic and which State forest reserve. The Chamber could rest assured that the scenery in view of the road would be reserved.
The president said that there were about 40.000 acres of bush and if it were reserved for forestry purposes it would not be so safe as if reserved for scenic purposes. They wanted a good solid belt of scenery for the fourteen miles of road, which ran through the bush. It was decided to bring the matter up again at the February meeting of the Chamber. The following remits to the conference of Chambers of Commerce in Christchurch on November 23 and 24 were submitted by> the sub-committee: — (1) “That in the distribution of sugar, retailers should not be compelled to obtain supplies from any particular distributor.” Mr. Macdonald stated that at present retailers had to nominate the distributor from whom they would obtain their supplies for the following twelve months, and could only get their sugar from that distributor. (2) “That having in view the geographical position of New Zealand and the dependence of our prosperity on ocean transport, this conference strongly approves of the establishment of shipping controlled within the Dominion.” The chairman said that this was a matter in which the Chamber had previously taken an interest and the remit should be supported. It was decided to support both remits and the president was appointed the Chamber’s delegate to the conference.
GENERAL ITEMS. Mr. C. D. Sole is to undergo a further operation to-morrow. At present he is reported to be progressing favorably. There was a good attendance of members at the lawns at Victoria Park yesterday. when the Stratford Croquet Club’a season was opened. The weather was excellent, the lawns in good condition. and the afternoon proved a very enjoyable one in every way. Mrs. R. Dingle, of New Plymouth, was present at the request of Mrs. L. Riera. president of the club, and played, the ‘first hoop, -.declaring the season open. Indications are that this reason will be a most successful one. The local Boy Scouts, under Mr. Claude Winter, are making preparations for a concert, which will be held in the Town Hall early in December, in order to raise funds to assist in Scout work. It will soon be time to get your Christmas mail away to the Old Country and readers are advised to order their private greeting cards in good time. A splendid range of sample cards can be seen at Wilson Bros., Printers and Stationers, Stratford, and orders placed with them will be completed promptly and carefully.
