YESTERDAY’S LOAN POLLS. GOOD MAJORITIES SHOWN. VOTING NOT HEAVT. The poll of the New Plymouth ratepayers yesterday resulted in decisive majorities in favor of the various loans. They were: (1) A sum of £9OOO to be raised for enlargement of No. 2 tunnel at the hydroelectric works, and for taking of survey of water resources; (2) loan of £142,000 for repayment of loans falling due next year; (3) £lO,OOO to be borrowed for effecting extensions to the waterworks. In the case of the £9OOO and £142,000 loans the ratepayers also gave the council the authority asked for in respect to paying an increased rate of interest, owing to the fact that under present conditions the usual per cent, limit is not sufficient. The poll was a comparatively small one, less than 800 ratepayers recording their votes. The £9OOO loan, for which most opposition was expected, was carried by a majority of 292 votes, and was only beaten at one booth, St. Aubyn, where the voting was 27—26 against the proposal. Vogeltown supported it by ’a majority of two, but in the other cases the balance was much larger. The majority for the £142,000 loan was 452, and for the £lO,OOO loan it was 488. The polling arrangements were ably managed by the returning officer (Mr. R. Day) and staff. Details of the voting in each case are: £9OOO LOAN (For Hydro-Electric Works).
