LIFE-SAVING.

NORTH TARANAKI CENTRE.

THE ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the North Taranaki head centre of the Royal LifeSaving Society was held in the . New Plymouth Soldiers’ Club last night, Mr. W. C. Weston presiding over a fair attendance. Apologies were received from Messrs. L. B. Webster, A. R. Standish, F. J. Eggleton, and Dr. Wade. In moving the adoption of the bal-ance-sheet Mr. Weston said the centre had now had five years of useful service. He ! was pleased to welcome Mr. ' the newly-appointed caretaker of the ! baths, and hoped that with his coming i new interest would be taken in the sport. The committee had decided to provide a cup for competition by both girls and boys of the schools, and any school would be able to enter any number of teams. During the year a member of the society, Mr. Stroud, had been instrumental in saving the life of a man at the East End beach, Mr. Hargraves I also rendering valuable service in reI suscitating efforts. There had been no for the Tabor Shield last i year, but he hoped it would be again i competed for this year. The examiners : had reported that the standard attained i by the schools had not been quite up to that of the previous year, but with the i assistance of Mr. Mathiesou the standard should’ again improve.

The balance-sheet showed expenditure £44 12s 9d and the receipts £ll6 15s lid, leaving a credit balance of £72 3s 2d. The assets were set down as/ £ll7 9s 4d, and the liabilities as £6 15s lOd. The balance-sheet was adopted without discussion. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. ‘ Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows: President, Mr. A. R. Standish; vice-prpsidents, Miss Mclntosh, Messrs. Eggleton, E. Coleman, R. G. Howell, K. Kirk. W. N. Stephenson. M. D. Stagpoole, G. F. Bertrand, W. Brown. R. L. Mcllroy, I. N. Renaud, D. Owen, O. McHardy. F. JDarling; trusters, Messrs. W. Weston, D. J. Hughes, and I. Bennett: auditors, Messrs. C. ’l’. Mills and E. P. Webster: delegate to centre, Mr. B. Knox; hon. organisers and examiners, Messrs. N. A. Christiansen and MaLhieson. GENERAL. Mr. Mathieson nfoved that junior members be admitted to the society at a fee of Is. In seconding the motion, Mr. Christiansen said the junior members should be encouraged in every possible way. He wished to add to the resolution that elementary and proflei- | ency certificates in life-saving be issued to junior members free of charge on qualification. The motion, as amended, was carried. The question of providing a life-sav-ing reel al the Ngamotu beach was discussed, Mr. Weston stating that the recent boating accident on that beach had given rise to the question whether the society should do something 1 in the way of providing for the safety of the beach. It was stated that interest was being taken in the matter in several (directions, and the old boys of the High Schoo! were considering the formation of a club in that quarter. Mr. M esron intimated that the club, if formed. ‘ would receive every assistance from the j society. Votes of thanks were accorded the retiring president and the secretary for | their services, and an honorarium of Co I 5s was voted to the secretary.
