THE MELBOURNE CUP.

VICTORY FOR SISTER OLIVE. A DECISIVE WIN. EURYTHMIC BREAKS DOWN. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Nov. 1, 7.20 p.m. Melbourne, Nov. 1. There was hot, sultry weather for the second day of the Victorian R.C. spring meeting to-day. An enormous crowd was present, including the Governor-General and the State Governor. There were heavy raindrops after the second race, but it cleared before the Cup. The going was in great order. The favorite, Shadow Dancer, jumped indifferently in the hurdles race, and finished seventh. Telecles, trained by Holt, led into the straight and won handsomely from the twelve-year-old Coronatus. Boyd rode the winner. Green Malt was always prominent in the Railway Highweight Handicap, and won narrowly from Otacre. The Tasmanian Talisman was a close third. Green Malt cost the present owner £4OO as a yearling. The time was half a second outside the race record.

Etherian, on the far side, scored decisively in the November Nursery in good time. Etherian was bred by its owner, and was ridden by Lewis. Owing to a fall on Saturday Dempsey was unable to ride Eurythmic in the Cup, and McLachlan took the mount, while J. King replaced McLachlan on Kennaquhair. There was great excitement in the Melbourne Cup. The favorite, Eurythmic, got the ropes of the barrier in his mouth at the start; otherwise he had a clean passage, but broke down when going well. David met with interference early in the race, but finished well. Sister Olive got a bad start, but soon ran into fifth place. She had the race won at the distance, and scored decisively. Sister Olive is owned by .the breeder, Mr. Fred Norman, a member of the Victorian Racing Club, and is trained by John Williams at Caulfield. The first half mile of the Cup took 52sec., the next four furlongs 54, the succeeding four 50$ and the last, four 51. The top-weight, lolaus, won the Steeples easily, ridden by the New Zealander S’. Thompson. Tararu Jack was second to last. Colonel Aides was pulled up. Royal Guardian fell in the Cup. Furious had command for the first furlong from Paratoo and King of the Forest. Duke Napoli then went to the front, and racing out of the straight he was two lengths ahead of Lionel Attwill, The Rover, Harvest King, Sinbad the Sailor and Sister Olive. Lionel Attwill reduced Duke Napoli’s lead to a length racing past the mile. These two headed the field at the back, The Rover and Sister Olive being next. David was third from last here. Five furlongs from home Lionel Attwill had a length lead of The Rover, Sinbad the Sailor, Amazonia'and Sister Olive being the nearest of the others. The order into the straight was Harvest King, Sister Olive, Purser. The Rover, Lionel Attwill, Amazonia, Eurythmic. Sister Olive came away at the distance and won by three-quarters of a length, the third horse a length away. Harvest Kling was fourth and David fifth. Purser, Ethiopian and Honey Bee were next, apd Furious was eighteenth. Eurythmic broke down in the last furlong. Time, 3min 27$sec.

Won by three-quarters of a length, half a length separating second and third. Time, 3min 47$sec..

SOME INTERESTING FACTS. Archer (1861 and 1862) is the only horse that has won two Melbourne Cups. Comedy King is the only imported horse that has been successful in the Cup. R. Lewis has ridden in 24 Melbourne Cups. He won on The Victory in 1902, on Patrobaa In 1915, and on Artilleryman In 1919. The largest Cup field was 39, in Carbine's y6 The Cup was first started with the barrier in 1894—Patron’s year. No protest against a Melbourne Cup winner has ever been sustained. One or two have been entered. The attendance at the first Melbourne Cup was estimated at 4000. The lightest weight ever carried to victory in the event was sst 41b, by Banker in 1863. There was no fixed minimum weight in those days. / Tory Boy (1865) is the only grey horse that has won the Cup. Only four mares have been successful—Briseia (1970), Auraria (1895), Acrasia (1904) and Sister Olive (1921). Carbine’s Cup was the richest. The stake was £13,230, of which the winner took £lO,230. The stake in Banker’s year (1863) was only £5lO. Four Melbourne Cups were worth over £lO,OOO. They were won by Carbine (1890), Malvolio (1891), Glenloth (1892) and Tarcoola (1893). The only horses to win botli the Derbj’ and Melbourne Cup were Lantern, Briseis, Chester, Grand Flaneur, Martini-Henry, Newhaven, Merriwee, Poseidon, Prince Foote, and Patrobas. Briseis in 187 G won the treble —Derby, Melbourne Cup and Oaks. The record time for the Cup (3mln 24%sec) was made by Artilleryman in 1919. In the early years the Melbourne Cup was run on the first day of the V.R.C. meeting. Four horses sired by Positano have won the Melbourne Cup—Lord Cardigan, Poseidon, Lord Nolan and Piastre. Poseidon is the only horse that has won both the Caulfield Cup and the Melbourne Cup.

The greatest outsider to win the Cup was The Pearl, who in 1871 started at 100 to 1. W S. Hiekonbothain trained four Melbourne Cup winners—Mentor in 1888, Carbine in 1890, Newhaven in 1896, and Blue Spec In 1905. He was second in 1889 with Carbine, and in 1910 Trafalgar, who hailed from his stable, ran Comedy King to half a neck. The full brothers, Gaulus and The Grafter, ran first and second respectively in the Cup In 1897. The Grafter was only beaten a head. He won next year. Both horses were owned by the late William Forrester. Newhaven and The Grafter, two Melbourne Cup winners, subsequently won the City and Suburban Handicap in England—Newhaven in 1899 and The Grafter in the following year. The Barb was awarded list. 71b in the Melbourne Cup in 1869, but did not run. This is the highest weight ever allotted in connection with the race. Glencoe was given list, the same year, but was also a starter. The highest weight ever carried to victory was Hist 51b by Carbine in 1890. He was allotted lOst 121 b the following year, but did not start. Four New Zealandrbrcd horses have won the Cup—viz., Martini-Henry (1883), Carbine (1890), Apologue (1907) and Sasanof (1916). Auraria and Artilleryman, who were defeated in the V.R.C. Derby in their respective years, won the Melbourne Cup at the same meeting. Poitrel defeated a field of 22 when ho carried lOst. to victory in the Cup of 1920. Dottrel's time for the race was 3niin 25%sec, which was only once beaten —by Artilleryman in 1919. A three-year-old lias won the Cup on 19 occasions, viz.: Banker. Lantern, The Barb, Briseis, Chester, Grand Flaneur, Mart ini-Henry, Auraria, Newhaven, Merriwee, Clean Sweep, Lord Cardigan, Poseidon. Lord Nolan, Prince Foote, Patrobas, Sasanof, Artilleryman and Sister Olive. The highest weight carried to victory in the Cup by a three-year-old is 7.13, under which Newhaven won in 1896. The highest weight awarded to a three-year-old in the Melbourne Cup was Bst 6lb, which was the impost Anriun carried into third place tn the race of 1897.
