THE GOVERNOR’S VISIT.
SERVICE, AT ST. MARY’S CHURCH.
On Sunday morning Their Excellencies attended Divine service at St. Mary’s Church. Units of Boy and Girl Scouts, under Honorary Commissioner F. W. Sandford, lined the entrance from the street on the arrival and departure of the Governor-General and Lady Jellicoe.
The service was conducted by the Ven. Archdeacon F. G. Evans and the Rev. F. G. Harvie, assisted by Mr. H. E. Fookes, lay-reader. The Rev. Mr. Harvie delivered a thoughtful address, which he based on Matthew 22, 21 ■ "Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s and unto God the things that are God’s.” The preacher remarked that the two great anomalies in the world to-day, for which so far as one could see there had been absolutely no precedent in history, were the British Empire, by its size and comprehensiveness, and the kingdom of God on (earth or Christendom, which was closely analogous to the British Empire. Both were loosely knit together. The unifying spirit in the one case was the King and in the other Jesus Christ. It was said that the safety of the world depended on the integrity of the British Empire, and that the only thing to protect the integrity of the British Empire was Christianity. . The preacher spoke
of the need to see that the Christian character was kept untarnished. Referring to the important conference of nations to be held at Washington on disarmament, he expressed a. hope that its effect would be to establish as an actual fact in (he world the peace and goodwill for which Christianity stood. At the conclusion ot the service. Their Excellencies were conducted through the picturesque churchyard and shown the graves of the soldiers and sailors who foil in the early wars. They then re-entered the church and inspected the historical relics it contains. Lord Jellicoe displayed a genuine interest, and afterwards warmly thanked Mr. W. 11. Skinner for the information he had been able to give.
