NAVAL OFFICER'S HEROISM.
NEW HONOR FOR CAPTAIN EVANS. By Telegraph. —Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Oct. 30, 5.5 p.m. London, Oct. 28. The King has awarded Captain E. R. G. R. Evans, the Antarctic explorer and ex-commander of H.M.S. Broke, the silver medal for gallantry. When commanding H.M.S. Carlisle ne heard that the Chinese liner Hongmoh had broken in two in the Kankiang estuary with eleven hundred Chinese passengers on board. The Carlisle rushed to the rescue, and Captain Evans swam over a mile in a heavy sea. boarded the liner, encouraged the terrified Chinese, and directed rescue by the Carlisle’s and the ship’s boats. Captain Evans, whose name is associated with the heroism of the Antarctic, went south in the 1902-4 expedition and again in 1909 and 1912, while in 1913 he returned in command of the expedition after the death of Captain Scott. He commanded H.M.S. Broke in 1017 when that ship, with H.M.S. Swift, engaged and defeated six. l German destrovers. This was the outstanding incident of a distinguished career during the war.
