MINING CRISIS.
UNEMPLOYMENT RIFE. DISTRIBUTION OF £3,000,000. London, Oct. 1. The cloud of unemployment overshadowed to-day's meeting of the executive of the Miners’ Federation in London, whose main business was the discussion of means of carrying on industry when the. Govei’nment’s subsidy ends on Friday. Reports from districts showed that unemployment was rife as the result of the closing of a number of pits and of others working short time.
Soup kitchens have been opened, and the municipal authorities are feeding the children.
It was announced that £3,000,<>00 out of the £10,000,000 of the State subvention to tide over the experimental period for the adjustment of wages has not been expended. It is understood that/ this will revert automatically to the Treasury, but the executive is of the opinion that part should be allocated for the relief of distress. Cm the contrary, some coalowners claim that the £3.000,000 should be devoted to repairing the damage done to the pits through the strike.
