NEGRO SHOOTS SHERIFF.

SUICIDE WHEN CORNERED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Oct. 25, 1.10 a.m. New York, Oct. 23. A Orange, Virginia, message states that Walter Ware, a young negro, and a companion, operating* an illicit whisky still, shot and killed the sheriff and his assistant. They then barricaded themselves in a barn and shot and seriously wounded nine men and slightly wounded several others. Ware threatened to shoot his own father, who implored him to surrender. When a posse composed of ex-servicemen set fire to the barn Ware shot himself dead. His companion was burned to death. The county and State authorities took extraordinary precautions to prevent a race riot as the result of the incident.
