ATHLETICS.

NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB INAUGURAL MEETING. It was unfortunate that the weather conditions were not more favorable for the inaugural meeting of the New Plymouth Amateur Athletic Club, on the High School grounds on Saturday, for the excellent programme provided certainly deserved a large attendance. The conduct of the gathering was such that augurs well for the success of the club, complete arrangements having been made for the carrying out of the programme, which was got. off right up to time. The bleak weather conditions generally interfered with the attendance, only about five hundred witnessing the sports.

In the majority of the events fields were good, and there was a noticeable keenness among the competitors, which no doubt was heightened by the presence of a quartette from the Hawera Athletic Club, and also one or two competitors from Wanganui. Finishes in the majority of cases were close, and the form displayed by some of the competitors promises well for the future, though there were no records broken. This, however, could hardly be expected, as the ground, after the rain of the past week, was somewhat on the heavy side. All the officials controlling tbe sports carried out their duties faithfully. They were: Referee, Mr. L. B. Webster; track stewards, Mr. A. L. Moore and Mr. A. L. Humphries; finishing judges, Messrs. E. Jackson, L. A. Nolan and F. Whittle; field judges, Mr. M. D. Stagpoole and Mr. Connell; timekeeper, Mr. V. Dalgleish; starter, Mr. W. H. Moyes; dressing room stewards, Messrs. Pope and Eggleton; marksmen, Messrs. Papps and Diprose; press steward, Mr. A. K. Ryder; clerk of course, Mr. E. Jackson; standard judge, Mr. J. McLeod; survey and record steward, Mr. F. Willis. Mr. L. W. Andrews, as hon. secretary and treasurer, carried out his duties splendidly. At the conclusion of the meeting Mr. Moyes congratulated the Hawera competitors on their success, and also thanked them for coming up and assisting at. the meeting. The New Plymouth Club, he said, hoped to reciprocate by sending competitors to the Huwera meetings. It was also intended io run evening meetings at New Plymouth during the season. Mr. Wilkinson briefly replied. Detailed results are :
