MANAIA.

VISIT OF GOVERNOR-GENERAL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Oct. 21. A meeting of the committee appointed to make arrangements for the reception of the Governor-General and Lady Jellicoe was held on Thursday evening and was attended by Messrs. J. G. Craig (chairman of the Town Board), T. McPhillips (chairman of the County Council and the Patriotic Committee), A. H. Christie, L. G. Neilson, T. A. Bridge, T. Hotter, J. Hickey, and W. J. Badley (town clerk). The chairman submitted a draft programme, which was adopted. The ViceRegal party will be met at the entrance to the town by a detachment of the Mounted Rifles, under Colonel Sutherland, and escorted to the Octagon. A guard of honor will here be formed of Territorials and Cadets, under Lieutenant Grant, V.C. An address will be read by the chairman of the Town Board, and presented to His Excellency, and a bouquet will be handed to Lady Jellic-e by a girl chosen from the public school. Girls from the public, convent. and district schools will form a guard of honor for Her Excellency. Mr. McPhillips, as chairman of the Patriotic Committee, will ask Lord Jellicoe to unveil the soldiers’ memorial, and the ceremony will conclude with the sounding of the “Last Post” and the firing of a volley. Their Excellencies will subsequently be taken on a visit to the old Armed Constabulary camp in the Domain, and, after returning to inspect the Maori War monument, they will proceed to Auroa, where a soldiers’ memorial is also to be unveiled. The ceremony in Manaia will be attended by children from the town and surrounding schools, and they will be provided with light refreshment.

Mr. Thos. Gardiner, who, during his three years’ residence in Manaia, has earned wide popularity, is about to leave for Hastings, where he will take up the duties of auctioneer for Mr. R. Sorenson. A public farewell will be tendered to Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner and family on Monday evening.
