THE HOLIDAY.
LABOR DAY ON MONDAY. A VARIETY OF FIXTURES. Monday (October 24) will be recognised as Labor Day this year and will therefore be a statutory holiday. From mid-day to-day till Tuesday morning will be available for holiday makers, and a number of fixtures are already Set down.
In New Plymouth to-day the Amateur Athletic Association’s first meeting is to be held, and with the solid support received in the way of entries the fixture should be a pronounced success, providing favorable weather’ is experienced. Followers of another branch of sport (boxing) will be catered for by the Taranaki Association’s tournament in the Coronation Hall to-night, when the chief bout is that between J. Heeney and L. Cadman, for the welterweight championship of the Dominion, and a purse of *2OO sovs. Trips to the North Egmont Mountain House are always means of providing a good outing, and as the week end excursions at reduced rates commence from to-day, an extra inducement is offered to any who have an intention of spending the holiday at the hostel and its beautiful surrounflings. On Monday the Waverley-Waitotera Racing Club’s annual meeting at Waverley will be the centre of attraction for a large number of people in Taranaki. Special train arrangements have been made in connection with this fix* ture. At New Plymouth there will be two sports gatherings, the Labor Da} meeting at Western Park, and the Scouts’ events at iKawaroa Park. Both of which should draw good attendances. The New Plymouth Golf Club has two engagements, to meet, and is sending one team to take part in a match at Wanganui, while other club representatives will play a Hawera team at New Plymouth.
