Mr. J. E. Wilson, S.M., who has recently returned from Samoa, is on a short holiday visit to New Plymouth. He is accompanied by Mrs. Wilson. Mr. W. A. Swinbourne, headmaster of the. Merton School, has resigned his position, having accepted an appointment under the Taranaki Board. A Christchurch telegram says the report that Professor Scott, of the Canterbury College school of engineering, has resigned is incorrect. He has only applied for leave of absence. A cable from London says Colonel •Samuel Wilson, assistant secretary of the Committee} of Imperial Defence, has been appointed Governor of Trinidad. Mr. C. du Meyer, the only member of the Springbok team who remained i New Zealand, has been making a tour of the thermal district and the Waikato. Applications from Miss Frances M. Mulligan (Opunake), and Miss Muriel Warner (Midhirst), to be placed on the probationers’ list were approved by the Taranaki Hospital Board at yesterday’s meeting. Mr. H. E. Fookes, superintendent of the New Plymouth branch of the Telegraph Department, retires voluntarily at the end of the year after .37 years’ service. With the exception of nine years at Wellington, Mr. Fookes has •been in the New Plymouth office -for the whole period of his service, and has held his present rank for a good number of years. His retirement will be regretted by those whose business brings theiri in contact with the telegraph superintendent, as he has ever been an efficient and courteous officer. A Press Association message from Auckland states that Mr. R. M. Doull, supervisor of the Auckland telegraph office, has been promoted to fill the vacancy. Mr. J. Andrews tendered his resignation as chairman of the farm committee at yesterday’s meeting of the Taranaki Hospital Board, intimating tbht he was unable to continue in this capacity owing to ill health. The chairman (Mr. M. Fraser) said it was a matter for regret among members that they were losing Mr. Andrews as the farm committee chairman, for during his four years of office he has done a vast amount of work, displaying grnat interest in the welfare of the farm. Mr. Fraser moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Andrews, which was endorsed by other members of the board, and carried. The hope was expressed that they would still have Mr. Andrews’ help as a member of the committee. Mr. S. Vickers was appointed to fill the vacancy.
