WAITARA.
HARBOR BOARD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Oct. 18. The monthly meeting of the Waitara Har’. r Board was held on Friday last. Present: Messrs. Jas. Hine (chairman), Spurdie, Ogle, Nosworthy, Jaggs and Marlow. An application of assignment of sublease of the Club Hotel from R. Fairweather to A. Keith was granted. The chairman reported on the wooden reclamation wall close to the boat shed, and said that although considerable damage had been done by the teredo to the hurdles, they were not in a state of total collapse, and he thought there was no fear of the reclaimed area being scoured. The secretary reported that stone was required to strengthen weak places in the breastwork, West Quay. Snagging had been carried out near the Rowing Club sheds. Authority was given to obtain the necessary stone. The net share to the Borough Council of endowment money for bridge maintenance was £135 14s 7d for the period ended September 30. THE BOWLING CLUB. The Waitara Bowling Club opened its season on Saturday last in fine weather, when there was a large attendance. Fitzroy sent a telegram conveying best wishes. The president (Mr. S. G. Fraser) congratulated the Saturday players of last year in winning the Gilmour Cup. Mr. Fraser made feeling reference to the loss the club had sustained through the death of Mr. S. Wylie, who had been really the father of the club. He trusted the coming season would be successful. He paid a tribute to the caretaker (Mr. Woisin) on the appearance of a good green. He then called on Mrs. W. Telfar to throw the “jack”, which that lady did amid cheers. The usual President’s v. Vice-President’s match was played, resulting in a win for the latter by 78 to 68. Waitara plays its first banner match on the 29th instant against Vogeltown at Waitara. CRICKET CLUB. The opening of the Waitara Cricket Club took place on Saturday. Prospects are for a successful season. The captain and secretary picked sides, the match resulting in a win for the former by 121 to f»0. GENERAL. It is reported that it is not unlikely the local freezing works will start killing operations in two or three weeks’ time.
