AUCKLAND BY-ELECTION.
THE INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. Mr. G. H. Foster, the Independent candidate for Auckland East, opened his campaign to-night. He said his ideas lay between Liberalism and Labor, and he admitted that a number of planks had been advocated by both parties. If returned he would saddle up with the eight or ten members representative of Labor, Independents and the remnant of the Liberals. He advocated a fusion of Liberals and Labor, and an elective Executive. He opposed the party system. As regards the tariff revision, he urged that bread and butter lings should be deft alone. Dealing with the Civil Service, he said retrenchment should he by reduction of salaries on a sliding scale, commencing at* £3OO. No vote was asked for, but the speaker wag cheered.
